Are you considering applying to City Year? We think you should know a few things before clicking submit!
City Year Culture
As an organization, we have a strong culture rooted in idealism. We believe all young people have the ability to make a real difference in the community by putting their idealism to work and dedicating a year to national service. This belief fuels our mission of keeping all students in school and on track to graduation and help them realize and reach their full potential.
Our jackets and can-do attitudes are all part of the City Year uniform, which represents our full-time commitment to service and leadership. The uniform is an important signal of trust for the students, families, and communities we serve. Our students recognize AmeriCorps members in uniform as role models they can look up to in their communities. Even though our students work with different AmeriCorps members each year, the uniform provides them with a sense of reliability and continuity in their schools and communities
Make Sure you're Eligible and able to Commit
As a City Year AmeriCorps member, you'll be working in a school full time for 11 months. On average, you'll spend between 10-12 hours in school Monday through Friday with occasional late nights and weekends. Many of our AmeriCorps members hold an additional part-time job that does not interfere with service hours.
In order to be eligible to serve, you must be between the age of 18-25, a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident, have completed high school or a GED, have served no more than 3 terms in an AmeriCorps state or national program, and agree to and pass a criminal background check.
Our Benefits Start During Service, but They Do Not End There
Service with City Year is a paid position. You'll earn a bi-weekly living stipend of $630 in all locations except San Jose, where the stipend is $850, and will also be eligible to receive an additional $180 - $200 per month for food assistance. As an AmeriCorps member, you'll have access to health insurance, student loan forbearance for eligible loans, a childcare allowance, and public transportation coverage. We serve in 29 cities, and the majority are major cities with robust transportation systems such as Boston's MBTA or New York's Metro System. You can learn more about transportation in our cities here.
During your service year, you will have access to a variety of professional development and leadership opportunities to help launch your career in any field or further your education. AmeriCorps members receive leadership training, resume and cover letter writing workshops, attend networking events with alumni and partners, and depending on the site, have access to a mentoring program with local corporate and non-profit partners.
At the end of your service, you will receive the Segal Education award of approximately $6,000, which can be used for tuition costs or to pay back existing student loans. Additionally, you will become eligible for exclusive scholarship opportunities to over 100 leading undergraduate and graduate colleges and universities.
Where Our AmeriCorps Members Live
Our admissions staff is committed to providing support and resources to help you find housing for your service year. Once you accept our offer to serve, we immediately connect you to your site's Facebook group and with other incoming AmeriCorps members at your site. To further support your search, we will provide you with housing manuals containing neighborhood recommendations and connect you with local City Year alumni.
When finding a place to live, we suggest you live either in or close to the community where you will be serving. Most AmeriCorps members will not be able to secure housing more than a month before their service begins. This is to be expected and is something all incoming AmeriCorps members should anticipate if planning to relocate for service. This may make you or your parents a bit nervous, but we are here to help you along the way!
