289 City Year Boston AmeriCorps members will serve highest number of Boston Public Schools students ever this year
Hundreds will kick off school year with service day at Condon K-8 School in South Boston
BOSTON, Mass. (September 5, 2017) – Beginning Friday, September 15, 2017, the Boston Public Schools (BPS) will join City Year Boston to welcome 289 City Year AmeriCorps members into service and kick off a new school year at City Year's Red Jacket Weekend. The multi-day event brings together school leaders, City Year alumni, and philanthropic champions to celebrate AmeriCorps members' service while also rolling up their sleeves at a service project at the Condon K-8 School in South Boston.
This year, City Year Boston AmeriCorps members will provide support in attendance, behavior, and coursework to 12,000 students in 23 schools, including the Condon. It marks the largest Boston corps and the most number of schools served in the site's 29-year history. They all will gather on Friday at City Year's "Opening Day" ceremony, sponsored by Comcast NBCUniversal, at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library. They will take the AmeriCorps pledge and commit to a year of full-time service, and Rob Consalvo, Deputy Superintendent of Boston Public Schools, and Steve Hackley of Comcast will deliver remarks.
On Saturday, City Year Boston and hundreds of volunteers will paint hallways and outdoor areas, create murals, clean up school-grounds, and pack school supply kits for students and teachers at the Condon school. Students and staff entering the Condon this year will have a bright, engaging physical environment that reflects the same care, energy, and dedication that they bring to school every day.
Comcast NBCUniversal is the national sponsor of Opening Day at all 28 City Year locations nationwide. A dedicated partner since 2001, Comcast NBCUniversal has provided more than $90 million in cash and in-kind support to City Year. During that time, City Year has grown from nearly 700 City Year AmeriCorps members to a corps of 3,100 diverse young leaders. In Boston, Comcast NBCUniversal sponsors the City Year team serving at the Jeremiah E. Burke High School in Dorchester, hosts Comcast Career Day each year as a professional development workshop for all City Year Boston AmeriCorps members, and engages hundreds of volunteers across Massachusetts in Comcast Cares Day.
