City Year members spend 10 months, day-in and day-out working with students, but rarely does our work extend beyond school hours. During Family Engagement Nights, our teams are able to interact with students and their families outside of that classroom mentality, while remaining on school grounds.
With this being their last Family Engagement Night of the year, the team at Al Raby High School decided to go all out and let their creativity fly with a Game Show twist! They built game show stations which included: Wheel of Fortune, Minute to Win It, and Are You Smarter Than A City Year?
The Family Engagement Night also showed the comraderie that City Year teams have for one another, as this event saw corps members volunteering to help from the Chalmers, CVCA, and Schurz teams!
Corps members Min Qiao and Angela Sander worked together on Wheel of Fortune...move over Vanna White!
Students were challenged to find the most possible words in this word scramble - they took the competition very seriously!
An Al Raby student is focused on the contest, while corps member Anisha Joenathan...is being Anisha
Students were given a score card at the beginning of the event, and, once activities were completed, it also served as a meal voucher and raffle ticket!
Chalmers corps members' Blair Wong and Sudeepti Rachakonda prepare donated burritos with a smile!
Raffle Prizes for the students, including a Louder Than A Bomb T-shirt and a whole cake!
One of the stations was a limerick station, where students were encouraged to provide nouns, adjectives, body parts, etc. (much like a game of Mad Libs), which then a corps member inserted into popular hip hop songs and had the student read out loud. This station, much like the rest of them, creatively incorporated lessons in a fun, engaging way!
Corps member Daniel Ouelette explains the rules of the station, while Rachel Brown prepares to insert students limerick's into songs
This Family Engagement Night was a huge success, and it's all thanks to the effort of these corps members. From the donations to the creation of the various stations, these members poured their hearts into this event. Thank you for making better happen!
