What is leadership?
How can students effectively learn leadership in school?
At Heyward Gibbes Middle School, City Year Columbia AmeriCorps members work every day leading small group tutoring and mentoring sessions, as well as running an afterschool program that helps students understand the importance of leadership both in school and in the community.
In order to gauge students’ opinions on leadership, team member Robert Henderson III polled about 50 students, asking what they believe a leader in school looks like. Below is a word graph that illustrates the different traits students feel leaders possess.
With words such as Respect, Integrity, and Love represented, it is clear to see that our students understand the depth of character it takes to be a true leader in school, in the community, and in life.
