It’s back to school time -- an exciting time for students, teachers, and schools as they prepare for their year of growth and learning. At City Year Jacksonville, our new 100 AmeriCorps members are preparing for their year of service – diving into an intensive learning and development program called Basic Training Academy (BTA). The purpose of BTA is tri-fold.

First, BTA ensures that all AmeriCorps members are fully prepared to engage with students, teachers, and school administrators at the start of the school year. Over the next 5 weeks, City Year AmeriCorps members will hone their academic intervention strategies, learn about the importance of social emotional development, and complete their transformation into mentors, tutors, and role models in the schools they will serve.

Secondly, our AmeriCorps members will see how City Year invests in their leadership development both inside and outside of the classroom. BTA provides the foundation of leadership development at City Year and introduces the corps to the various programs, structures and opportunities available to them throughout the coming year through City Year’s professional development framework, the Idealist Journey.

Finally, BTA serves as the opportunity to orient the corps members to the city they now call home and to frame the larger national service movement. As a proud partner of Volunteer Florida, our AmeriCorps members learn from day one that they are a part of a movement bigger than themselves working to improve America’s communities.  In fact, to launch BTA and the service year, City Year Jacksonville AmeriCorps members began their year of service by performing service alongside five local nonprofit partners, Clara White Mission, Rethreaded, Feeding Northeast Florida, Cummer Museum, and The Bridge of Northeast Florida. Dispatched to these organizations in small teams, this served as an opportunity for introductions among our new corps members as well as an introduction to the vibrant community they will call home for the next 10 months. Throughout BTA, our AmeriCorps members will explore and become more familiar with the Jacksonville community they serve.
