The Edward H. White High teachers, faculty and City Year corps members have worked long hours and long days to boost students’ class grades, reading levels and test-taking skills. Together, they’ve seen real successes.

At the beginning of the school year, Ms. Clement, a City Year partner and ninth grade reading teacher, made a point to engage her students in after school tutoring. She and City Year AmeriCorps members focused on particular students to increase their reading comprehension and other test-taking strategies.

In addition to the increase in their Write to Learn scores - an online writing program that challenges students to read, think critically and respond to prompts - “the students are more focused than what they were in October,” Clement said. “They’re more open to discussions, not as reserved as they used to be.”

Mr. Thomas, a former Ed White reading teacher turned Assistant Principal, added that he has noticed the positive difference made through the partnership. “City Year has been tremendous,” Mr. Thomas exclaimed, “the tutoring is helping the quality of the instruction, and the relationships built with students, teachers and admin have been very positive.”

With the Florida State Assessment is in March, the last day of school is June, there is plenty of work yet to do. Yet, the City Year and Edward H. White High partnership is prepared to tackle the coming challenges together.  

This year, “teachers look forward to coming to work,” Mr. Thomas said. “There is quality education being given to students. We still have a ways to go, but it’s some of the best I’ve seen in six years.”
