Shawn Peyatt is Assistant Principle at Figueroa Street Elementary School and the school’s City Year liaison.

How would you describe City Year AmeriCorps members? Enthusiastic and always willing to lend a hand. They will bend over backwards to meet the demands placed on them.

How does City Year help build a positive school culture and climate? City Year has planned many family nights, including Math Night, Literacy Night, an upcoming Earth Day of Play, and a Spelling Bee. They support the school by greeting the kids every morning before they even walk in the school, have lunch with the students, and are a positive presence every day.

How does having a City Year mentor in a student's life make a difference? City Year is able to connect with some of the most challenging scholars, even when school staff members cannot.

What do you predict will be the lasting legacy for the 2014-15 City Year team? This team is the most cohesive corps Figueroa Street has ever had, as well as the best performing team with the greatest impact.

And for fun . . . What is your favorite uniform part? You’re joking, right?
