On Wednesday, September 11th, more than 300 friends, families, and partners joined City Year Los Angeles on the South Lawn of LA City Hall for our 7th Annual Opening Day!
Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, LAUSD Superintendent Dr. John Deasy, City Year Los Angeles Board Chair Andrew Hauptman, and others joined 283 City Year AmeriCorps members to kick off the service year. This year our corps members will work in 22 LAUSD elementary, middle and high schools to keep students in school and on track to graduation. As Andrew Hauptman wrote in a recent Huffington Post Op-Ed, September 11th is a particularly appropriate time to launch our service year as people all over the country take time to reflect on our collective opportunity to serve others and unlock our potential as a nation.
We were honored to have Mayor Garcetti at Opening Day where he led all 283 corps members in their pledge to serve Los Angeles and thanked them for their commitment this year.
We would especially like to thank our Team Sponsors this year. They include: AT&T for Jefferson High School; Comcast NBCUniversal Telemundo for Civic Engagement; JPMorgan Chase for Mendez High School; OneWest Bank for Markham Middle School; Sony for John Liechty Middle School; Walmart for Stevenson Middle School; The Walt Disney Company for Normandie Avenue Elementary School; and Warner Bros. Entertainment for Clinton Middle School.
