City Year’s #makebetterhappen campaign is a national Twitter driven initiative designed to share the impact of corps members’ year of service through social media. For some, the idea of summing up a powerful day of service in 140 characters or less can be challenging.  In hopes to explore other ways of sharing experiences through social media and to appeal to the idea that “a picture is worth a thousand words,” City Year Los Angeles launched a campaign to #makebetterhappen through the ever popular application, Instagram.

From October 26th through November 1st, CYLA held its first ever Instagram Challenge.  Each day for one week, corps members were encouraged to post photos and videos based on that day’s challenge. Challenges included snapping photos of their school’s most inspiring mural to sharing a video of their team’s best spirit break.

Corps members posted an impressive 165 pictures throughout the 5 days and received over 1,700 likes!  ALL 22 of CYLA’s schools (and the wonderful Civic Engagement team) participated and showcased their service throughout the week! What an amazing response, Los Angeles!

To create some friendly competition and boost excitement for the challenge, a winner was chosen each day based on the most creative picture/ video and inspiring caption. Here are the winners of #CYLAInstaWeek…

PITW#5 – Multiply the power of everything! Social media is a powerful tool that can be used to spread word about the impact of our service. With each post, each hashtag, each tag, we are sending messages to everyone about City Year’s idealism and the power of young people to create social change.
