While teaching is the hardest thing I have ever done in my life, I am grateful for the training and preparation I received from City Year. City Year taught me how to build relationships and the importance of trust and understanding. I walk around my classroom giving high-fives and praising students for their hard work.
Corps to Corporate: The Journey of a City Year Louisiana AmeriCorps Member to Memphis
My service experience provided the opportunity to fulfill a personal aspiration, embarking on a people driven and service oriented career. I had no prior knowledge of City Year’s or AmeriCorps values, founding stories, or culture; I naively assumed we were merely another program of “outsiders” coming in to save economically disenfranchised youth. My mindset shifted as I met and overtime bonded with my fellow 2010-2011 corps members and leadership team in the Baton Rouge office of CYL.
