My name is Valerie Rieger. I was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and I came to the United States when I was eight years old, knowing very little words in English. This spring, I graduated from Florida International University, and I’m currently serving at Booker T. Senior High School. I serve at City Year because I want kids to recognize the importance of a good education.
When I was in high school, my advisor discouraged me from taking higher level classes because she thought they would be too challenging for me. I want kids to realize their potential, and know that they can achieve anything if they work hard for it. At school, I have the literacy coordinator role. In the near future, I will be planning a literacy event for students and parents to enjoy.
