Davis Middle School is home to the best facility and staff a City Year team could ask for. Several of the staff members, have worked at Davis for many years. During the years, they have been fortunate to work with many great corps members. I was lucky to interview a few of the wonderful Davis staff, regarding how City Year has made their experience at Davis more special.
Ms. Hall-Johnson, the librarian at Davis, had nothing but great things to say about her experience with the City Year team. “I’ve had a pleasant experience with City Year. I’ve worked with several members. It’s been a great experience. They offer another set of eyes and ears. Also, students see AmeriCorps members as older siblings, rather than adults”.
Ms. Jerrnigan, a 6th grade ELA teacher, loves her City Year members, as well as City Year’s overall purpose. “One thing that makes the connection between corps members and the students so special, is the programs and incentives that City Year has for the students. I think if I were to choose my favorite of programs/incentives, I’d say it’d be Wealthy Word Wednesday (an ELA initiative that helps students increase use of academic vocabulary with words from STAAR tests). I think it truly benefits towards helping the students prep for the STAAR tests”.
Ms. White, a 6th/7th grade math teacher, has had a pleasant experience with City Year during her years of teaching at Davis. “If I were to describe the power of the Red Jacket, it’d be safety. City Year is great with relationships with students, supporting in/outside of the classrooms, and intervening with behavior/attendance issued students”.
As one can see, the Davis facility is open hearted and welcoming to any City Year team that walks into Davis Middle School. The Davis City Year team is thankful for working with such great staff, as much as the facility is thankful for having City Year. That is a great example of why we love making better happen.
