We analyze student data throughout the year to inform and improve our work in schools.
In partnership with Alum Rock Union School District and East Side Union High School District, our evaluation team leverages both qualitative and quantitative data to ensure our 138 AmeriCorps members are providing targeted, effective interventions with students. In the past 2017-2018 school year in 13 San José schools, we were able to achieve powerful results:
Accelerating Academic Progress
67% of students who started the year with a D or F in English Language Arts courses who were tutored by City Year AmeriCorps members ended the year with an A, B, or C.
42% of students who started the year with a D or F in math courses who were tutored by City Year AmeriCorps members ended the year with an A, B, or C.
Supporting Academic Achievement from Elementary to High School
88% of middle and high school students receiving 4 or more years of City Year passed their English class, as opposed to only 70% of students overall
Enriching Student Achievement through After-School Programming
81% of students who attended City Year's after school program received a C or higher in math, compared to only 70% of nonparticipating students
Partnering with Teachers
Over 90% of surveyed partner teachers report that City Year helps to foster a positive learning environment in their classrooms
"What started as eight City Year AmeriCorps members has grown into 138, and we're looking for more. City Year has been one of our strongest improvement partners. The positive energy, the care and the commitment that City Year AmeriCorps members bring to our schools are invaluable."
- Dr. Hilaria Bauer, Superintendent, Alum Rock Union School District.
