Friction Ignites Flame of Idealism at Summer Academy

City Year's annual Summer Academy is a time of celebration, information and inspiration. It's a chance that all staff and senior AmeriCorps members have to hear about the new things happening in City Year, connect with other sites around the country, and be re-introduced to what we do, why we do it, and how we need to do it. But, this year we also challenged each other to not only see the things that we want to change in the world, but also to look in the mirror and see what we needed to change in ourselves (insert Michael Jackson song here).

AmeriCorps Member Spotlight: Andrew Harriman

City Year Tulsa AmeriCorps member, Andrew Harriman, had just graduated high school himself when he decided to serve with City Year this year. He can still vividly recall his own school experiences, and like many of the students he served this year, he remembers struggling both inside and outside the classroom and not knowing if he was going to be able to graduate. His year of service allowed him to help students like himself feel confident about learning and succeeding school.

AmeriCorps Member Spotlight: Tajé Jackson

Tajé Jackson is taking a road less traveled on her journey to becoming a pediatrician. She said it was the immediate connection she felt with the City Year mission to build relationships with students that resonated with her professional goals to be able to better understand her future young patients. She also wishes she would have had a mentor during her education to help guide and push her to reach her goals like she does now for her high school students at Nathan Hale High School.

AmeriCorps Member Spotlight: Jae Kim

Jae knew he was ready but wasn't quite sure what was on the horizon for him to take on next. He knew he was maybe interested in teaching and also that he wanted to break out of the hometown bubble he had grown up in to have new experiences and learn about other cultures. So, when a friend suggested he take a transition year to serve students in one of City Year's 28 nationwide sites, Jae opened his heart and mind to going wherever this opportunity took him.

AmeriCorps Member Spotlight: Alexis Richardson

Alexis Richardson is grateful she had a positive experience with education growing up, so positive, in fact, she decided she wanted to become a teacher. Serving with City Year Tulsa has allowed her to test drive a career in education while making a positive impact in the lives of the students she works with at Sequoyah Elementary School.
